Is dancing a good workout?

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

The answer is yes! Dancing is a whole-body workout that's actually fun.

It's good for your heart, it makes you stronger, and it can help with balance and coordination.

A 30-minute dance class burns between 200 and 300 calories, it depends on what rhythm you are dancing

Dancing counts as cardio because it elevates our heart rate (as long as the intensity is high enough), causes us to break a sweat, and induces shortness of breath—just like other forms of cardiovascular exercises, such as running and brisk walking.

More benefits of dancing you are going to experience while you do your cardio:

  • Increases confidence

  • Helps with flexibility and balance

  • Dancing is easier on the joints

  • Increases strength

  • It boosts brain function

  • Reduce stress

  • Increases energy

  • Improved memory

  • Increases endorphin levels

  • Keeps mind sharp

Types of Dance you can choose, keep in mind that not all the rhythms burn the same calories. There are dance styles to fit almost anyone and any mood. The kind you choose may depend on what is available in your area and your own taste in dance or music. If you have danced before, you can pick up where you left off. Or you may decide to choose something new.

Here are some types of classes you may want to try:

  • Cardio dance

  • Hip hop

  • Bachata

  • Merengue

  • Mapalé

  • Champeta

  • Salsa Choke

  • Cumbia

  • Salsa

You can try dancing on your own to your favorite tunes, or you can opt for a more structured format by joining a dance class or group session at your gym or local dance studio. There’s also the option of following along to online videos that focus on dance moves to lose weight.

What’s most important is to find the style and type of dance that you most enjoy.
